*Mona Lisa Beamed To The Moon*

Sci Fi Much? This week NASA used a Laser to beam a picture of the famous painting to the moon.  The image traveled almost 240,000 miles from the Next Generation Satellite Laser Ranging station at NASA to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter orbiting the moon.

In the future this type of communication could be an alternative to radio transmission… or someday be used for higher data rates than radio…

That's some cool spacey stuff right there. Bring on the holodeck!

(Note: it did not look like the attached picture.. it was grey and pixely.. but this picture is cooler)

  1. For geeks that want to perceive the info more grandly….the speed of light is 186k mi/s, and the data traveled ~250k miles total…nice.

Under 2 seconds would definitely be an acceptable time frame in which to receive information from my minions completely dominating Earth and transmitting the death screams to me on my moon base.

And if my math is wrong, my moon base joke redeems me.

  2. They have been bouncing laser and radio waves off the moon for a while. Putting an image on it or transferring data in such a manor won't be efficient simply because of the distance and it isn't always in a position to use. You would have to have a network of satellites still surrounding the planet to make good continual use of it. Which means  it will be no faster than just using the satellites themselves.

  3. +Mark Leach if people were actually worried about government waste, then NASA would be about the last place to look given how small a fraction of all government spending their budget makes up. No, I think this is about people being overly cynical and knee-jerk reactionaries. As for private industry being a better option, that remains to be seen, given the somewhat spotty track record with that sort of thing in other endeavors

  4. NASA, like the military and the interstate highway system, is exactly the kind of thing that should be government controlled. It handles huge projects that require lots of coordination and profitability is not the main goal. There is return on investment due to the advancement of knowledge but that isn't the primary reason for NASA's existence.
