Google+ grows to become 2nd largest social platform globally

Wow, that was quick! Like I had said before it was only a matter of time!

Google+, who despite being branded a failure or ghost town by large portions of the media, grew in terms of active usage by 27% to 343m users to become the number 2 social platform. Interestingly for Google, YouTube (not previously tracked by us as a social platform) comes in at number 3, demonstrating the immense opportunity of linking Google’s services through the G+ social layer. This is also a key indication of why Google+ integrated with the Google product set is so key to the future of search and the internet. We’ve got more coming on Google+ later this week as well.

The two social medias I just don't get are Pinterest and LinkedIn; the latter, I'm told, is all about business connections – fine, but I'd hardly call that a 'social' thing – and the former I just don't understand the concept of at all.

I'm doing what I can to spread the word about Google+ here in the UK – setting up Communities and getting friends involved, taking time to explain by email when people ask me about what I'm using, cross-posting but always providing a link to the source (+Friends+Me is a boon for this), etc.

The one thing I haven't done, this 'killer draw' you talk about, +Amanda Blain? Participate in a Hangout! I've watched one, I've commented on one – never actually Hungout! I'd like to use it like a interactive broadcast of a live stream of one of my DJ gigs this year… Something to research and give a shot at.

  92. Joe Diamond January 26, 2013 at 3:24 pm - Reply

My initial reaction to this was that I have a hard time believing that Google+ has surpassed Twitter in active usage despite the fact that I soooo want it to be true. However to Google, an active Google+ user is someone that uses a Google+ service which can in fact be just about any part of the Google ecosystem. For example, hitting a +1 on an app in the Google Play Store would count as active usage. Thinking about it this way makes a lot more sense.

I expect Google + to overtake Facebook at some point. Everyone (including me) hates so many aspects of the thing, and the Facebook execs seem to do whatever the hell they please whether people like it or not. So Facebook'll probably go the way of Myspace eventually. Don't know much about Google +, but it seems increasingly poised to take it's place.
